Begin With the Hair

One of my favorite ways to illustrate faces is to begin with a hair style paper piece.  I like to use fine art paper, newspaper, catalogs, or scrap paper.  Paper I painted myself or some old artwork made by my kids is one of my favorite sources for collage material.

Once you cut a hairstyle paper piece, use a glue stick to affix it onto a journal page (or piece of blank art paper).  Use a drawing pencil to draw the face and details.  When all of the details are drawn on, you might want to use some watercolor to add color to all or some of the parts of the face.

Maybe name your new friends?

About Emily

Hi, I’m Emily. I love discovering ways for people to stretch the boundaries of their imaginations. I’m especially interested in exploring the connection between art & writing, and how both can nurture people’s capacity to imagine. I share inspiration, projects, curriculum ideas, creative tools, and links to fantastic resources in this space.

Welcome!
I’m so glad you are here.
